“I am LadyConstellation,
“I am also Eliza Mirk.”
For the main character, this is a paradox that can never be solved and she is about to find out how wrong she is.
Eliza Mirk is not an average eighteen-year-old student. 1.) She’s “Creepy-Don’t-Touch-Her-You’ll-Get-Rabies Eliza at school. She’s a weirdo. 2.) At home, she is misunderstood daughter of athletic parents who also have no understanding of Internet. She is also an older sister of two hyper middle-schoolers named Church and Sully. 3.) Inside her room, she’s the creator of Internet’s most famous webtoon, Monstrous Sea, which Eliza said is a combination of the Final Fantasy video games and the Faust Legend. 4.) In the webtoon’s forum, she goes by the username, LadyConstellation and she’s very famous. No one knows her real identity except her two brothers, and two online friends, Max and Emmy, who help her stay famous and anonymous. And also earn through the webtoon.
These pretty much sum up Eliza Mirk’s wonderful life but none of these I’d remember when I hear her name in the future. This might:
Eliza Mirk has plenty of monsters…
Not only in the webtoon she created, but in her own real physical life. It’s everywhere around her. Worse, even within her. She’s not even that aware of it. Until she met Wallace, the most famous fanfiction writer of Monstrous Sea. Wallace, who doesn’t like talking and have monsters of his own, somehow made Eliza get out of her room and walk the monstrous sea to face her monsters.
With Wallace, the status quo that Eliza has maintained all her life starts to change. She was very unsocial and wants to be left alone always. One thing happens leads to another. Before she knew it, she’s already in love. And later would lead to her facing her monsters.
Eliza, who’s been suffering anxiety(she was unaware of this), gives life to monsters she has been feeding almost all her life . When her identity was discovered, these monsters surfaced themselves and poor Eliza had no idea to face them. Until she realized that she created those monsters. Thanks to her favorite book, The Children of Hypnos, she realized this.
The metonymy between Eliza’s real life and webtoon is astounding. In both, she created monsters and only she can defeat them. In real world, by facing them and in webtoon, by finishing it.
About the paradox? There is no paradox. It’s her anxiety deceiving her. She is both Eliza and LadyConstellation, who are both creator of monsters and have the power to end them.
This book is close to my heart, and so chose it to be the first to post here. The issues it somehow tackled are actually my issues. It depicts the life of an artist; the importance and significance of her arts in her life; the role the fans and artists play in each other’s lives, and mental health.
Overall, this is a well-written novel with a message. I highly recommend this to everyone. Though this is Young Adult, it would be great if older readers be familiarized with the issues tackled by the book. Besides, the characters are relatable. I cried almost non-stop from the half to the end of it.
WHAT I LEARNED:
There is always someone who will look at the stars and find me. He will be with me as I walk in the sea of life, where there are monsters. Monsters which most I created. And despite the monsters, the walk would seem peaceful. 🙂
It’s from two most memorable quotes in Monstrous Sea.
“You found me in Constellation.”
“There are Monsters in the sea.”
Thank you for reading…
Have a blissful reading, my friend. 🙂
