Happy Tuesday Nerds,
First Tuesday of the month and I love our topic. But before that… This meme is hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is Top Ten Books I Decided to DNF (did not finish). But in all my reading life, I’ve DNF’ed only two books and they’re not even worth mentioning. (Awww, it pains me to say that but it’s true). So anyway, I twisted the topic and turned it to books I considered DNF’ing but yeah I didn’t. Some I’m glad I didn’t drop but the others, I just need to read them because they’re pretty hyped books and that I’m really curious if something amazing will happen before they end. 🙂 🙂 🙂
SPOILERS AHEAD (sorry had to mention some of them 😦 )
♠♠♠ TEN BOOKS I CONSIDERED DNF’ing ♠♠♠
1. Hunted by Meagan Spooner
I’m in minority I know. I love Beauty and the Beast and I try to read every retelling out there and well, try liking them too. Sadly, I ended up rating Hunted 3 stars and in my standards that means mediocre. It isn’t really that bad, I love the characters. BUT IT WAS TOO SLOW. Like every part of the story drags. It was such a chore to read. I was constantly egging the story to pick up and get in to action. I still finished it though, coz aside from its pacing everything else is okay. Not great but good enough.
2. The Witch Doesn’t Burn In This One by Amanda Lovelace
I love Poetry but this one just didn’t agree with me. Sure I love and agree with the message its trying to convey but the style wasn’t for me. Plus, instead of encouraging and uplifting, I felt like the only feeling it possesses was rage and I don’t like that. I don’t mind reading poems filled with emotion and I’m into feminism but this one is simply, I can’t really explain it. anyway, this one I received as an ARC so I had to finish it.
3. The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
I found myself skipping through pages with The Belles. Again, I’m in a minority. Sure the world was amazing, the story was intriguing, the concept was simply amazing but the writing. Sure it was aesthetic but it’s TOO aesthetic because it’s all description. I know that the readers should be introduced to the fictional world but don’t overdo it. Instead let’s get to the action more. With too many descriptions about every little thing in the surrounding, the focus swifts away from the main purpose of the scene and that sucks, it makes the whole story slow.
4. Matched Series by Ally Condie
Look at the cover. The whole trilogy’s covers are simply gorgeous. That’s why I bought the whole series, but the story was terrible. I mean I was almost fascinated by the dystopian setting, if my memory serves me right, this book is where there’s a hundred poems, hundred pieces of everything that’s only left from the past, the past being our current world. It was good, right? but the pacing. Nothing amazing was happening. There was even this part, maybe in the 2nd book, where they just walked and walked for at least half the book, with too few actions. Ugh! It was so painful to read.
5. Look The Part by Jewel E. Ann
This one I thought I’d really enjoy. Kinda angsty but sweet Romance but no. This book is filled with all cliche plot points possible. A widower who blames himself for his wife’s death, a child with issues, a divorcee whose ex was an amputee (it’s not enough that the hero is a widower, the heroine should be a divorcee too) and a music therapist that was overly cheery and somehow always horny. Seriously, I love steamy scenes, specially slow-burn attraction that will just explode eventually but I lost count on how many times SHE mentioned (thought or spoken) the word orgasm. I just found it too much. The sexual tension was already there and it was amazing and enjoyable, no need to overdo it.
6. A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn
I read this one after watching Beastly, a film adaptation of a book written by Alex Flinn too. Beastly was okay and I was expecting A kiss in Time, a sleeping beauty retelling, would be an okay-read too. See, my expectation wasn’t even high but alas! this one got two stars from me. Wait? was that 1.5?
7. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Aaaah!!! I’m crying. Leigh Bardugo wrote SoC which has become one of my all-time favorite series but Shadow and Bone wasn’t just as good. To be honest, I don’t hate this book, I just found Alina so dull, I almost DNF this. But I couldn’t because I was already planning to read SoC that time and this one should come first as it introduces the whole GrishaVerse. But overall I love the trilogy, I mean, I met Nikolai in Book 2. Duh!!! Thank God, I didn’t DNF this one.
OMG!!! I’m so excited to reread SoC this month.
8. The Oddling Prince by Nancy Springer
God, the cover was gorgeous! I love Nancy Springer’s writing style, she uses an archaic language but the content was so boring. Not to mention a little icky. yeah the twist in the ending explained it all but that doesn’t change how I felt reading it. I was expecting a fantastic loyal relationship between brothers, it was there but the MCs are just too lame and boring.
9. Everless by Sara Holland
I almost DNF this book all because of the heroine, Jules. She’s just dumb. Hahaha… sorry about the word. Okay maybe ignorant is the right word. Seriously, her action were eye-roll inducing. Now, I’m laughing with the absurdity of it. I don’t just get Jules. She can’t realize a thing without other people helping her. And you see she’s claiming that she’s in love with a guy she last seen eight years ago and they were only eight years old that time. She’s even thinking he still feel the same. God that was embarrassing to read. But this doesn’t mean I won’t read Book 2, coz I will. That ending was very intriguing.
10. A Knight in shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
This one I almost DNF as early as Chapter one. The heroine seemed foolish too but then the story picks up. Her knight in shining armor arrived and I found myself enjoying it. But the ending was controversial. I read this one two years ago but I remember not complaining about the ending. Maybe I’ll reread it.
Hope you guys enjoyed my list today. Have you read any of these books and do we share the same sentiments about them? Let’s chat.
And drop your own links below, I wanna see what you guys DNFed. And I won’t even mind spoilers as long as it will save me from wasting my time. 🙂 🙂 🙂
