Ten Books I Read When I’m in a Reading Slump – Top Ten Tuesday #21

Hi Guys,

I haven’t done this meme in a while and I kinda missed it. This one’s hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl and this week’s topic is “Top Ten Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump”. For me a book that can really pull me out a slump is a book that really made me happy in any way. Maybe the writing was great, or the story touched me in a special way. Or maybe reading it just made me laugh that I want more (probably I’d find a book in the same genre). That being said, it doesn’t matter what genre the book is, as long as I read them while I was in a slump and it made me want to pick a book right after finishing it.

So without further ado, these are the books I read while in a slump and helped me out of it.

1.) Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley

It’s not hard to get rid of Reading slump after reading this one. The main characters, Rachel and Henry are not only booklovers, but Henry’s family even owns a Secondhand bookstore where there’s a section called Letter Library where people can leave notes and messages. SO the story is filled with books, and it’s a big part of how the story moved forward.

2.) The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss 

I read this one earlier this year and if I remember it correctly, I was so into fantasy the beginning of the year when suddenly I read a fantasy ARC novel that lose my fantasy appetite. Worse, I lost my reading appetite entirely. Then I read The Name of the Wind and I’m back. This book has one of my favorite characters. His name is Kvothe and his tale is just so good, it brightens my reading life again.

3.) Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas

I can’t even count how many times I’ve read this one out boredom. When I’m bored and don’t know what to read and every book I have seems not worth reading (aka I’m in a slump, LOL), I’d just pick Devil in Winter and start reading.  I love the story and the characters. Really there’s nothing to hate in this book…

4.) The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This must be one of the most spectacular books I’ve read in my life and I just finished reading it yesterday. Yes, so my emotions are still a mess. I can’t even make a review yet. And yes this book pulled me out of a slump. Last week I read a series that is so underwhelming, I felt so lazy reading  anything, but now, I’m back.

5.) The Wall of Winnipeg by Mariana Zapata

Oh my God this book. I never thought I’d love a contemporary Romance again as much as I love this one. You see I have a love and hate relationship with Contemporary Romance that it became so hard now to fall in love with the genre. When I read this book, I wasn’t really in a slump, just in a contemporary slump, but after reading this book, I ended up reading 4 other books from the same author.

6.) Kiss an Angel by Susan  Elizabeth Phillipps

Just like Devil in Winter, I don’t know how many times I’ve read this one. Kiss an Angel is and will always be my go-to book whenever I’m in a slump. This would be my first choice always. No matter what genre pushed me into a slump, this book usually pulls me out of it.

It has everything I want in a book.

7.) Eliza and her Monsters by Francesca Zappa

I read Eliza’s story last year and it made me read YA again. I don’t hate the genre, I just don’t find them interesting anymore so why bother reading them. But I really fell in love with this amazing book even though the only reason I bought it is the cover.And I think you’ll agree. 🙂

Also Eliza is a webcomic creator and that’s just so nerdy.

8.) To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Earlier this year, I’ve read The Belles, The Oddling Prince and Everless consecutively. These three books, especially TOP and Belles almost got me in a reading slump but then I picked up TKAK, and I’m okay again. I love YA Fantasy again. hehe.

The MCs are more of anti-heroes so there’s that.

9.) The Help by Kathryn Stockett

To start a year in a slump is just the worst. Trust me, I was in a reading slump when the previous year started. Imagine how bad I feel after writing my bookish goals and then learned that I’m in a slump. After polls in GR and countless suggestions from friends, I decided to read The Help and that was one of the best decisions I’ve made last year. This one is phenomenal.

10) The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

If you want to read something that don’t need so much thinking and you just want to have fun, this one is a perfect choice. It’s perfect for a slump. It has depths but it won’t require so much from you yet it will give so much. WOW!!! that was one good description. 🙂 🙂
