5 Books I’m So Scared to Read and Why

Hi Blisses,

These are not horror books. I feel like I need to clear that thing up first. And no, I didn’t misuse the word, I’m really scared to read the books I’m about to share. It’s just that at times, for some reasons, I find some books too scary to read. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to read them, I’m just scared to do so. I do believe I’m not the only one who feels this way sometimes but still I feel so coward for giving in to fear and worry (lol) and often miss good books.

I’ll share my reason for each book and hopefully nobody shoot arrows at me for judging these books before reading them, especially if it’s their favorite book. 🙂 🙂

And now, let’s get on the list…

1.) The Wicked King by Holly Black (Folk of the Air #2)

I love Holly Black and The Cruel Prince (book 1 in the series). But since I loved it, everything that happened in it is imprinted on my mind, along with the emotions it gave me. The emotions that the characters gave me especially Cardan. Cardan was the cruel prince and he’s the wicked king now. And oh my God, I’m so scared to see what he’s gonna do this time. Worse, I know he has valid reasons to be not just cruel to Jude, but to be wicked. I don’t think I can handle that. If you’ve read The Cruel Prince, you know what I’m talking about. And if you’ve read this book, tell me, is my fear OK?

REASON: The previous book’s effect on me.

2.) The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Somebody shoot me now for not reading this book yet. But you guys, the hype surrounding this book is overwhelming. Too overwhelming. I know the message is important and I’m all for it but I can’t help but wonder about the other factors of the book. I’m all for the message. I love seeing books and films that tackle such important issues but it’s not just the message that I look for in a book. There’s the character. What if I end up not liking Starr? The writing style? What if the writing style is not for me? What if I don’t agree with some things that happen in the book? How would I rate this book in the future?

REASON: The Hype and the uncertainty whether I will like the other elements in the book

3.) All Sarah J. Maas’ Books

Just like THUG, the hype surrounding Maas’ books is too overwhelming, but that’s not exactly why I can’t bring myself to read her books, even though I own some of them. The thing that bothers me lies in the Romance aspect. I’m not a fan of romantic plots or subplots that changes the love interest somewhere in the middle of the book or series. I also dislike reading love triangles. In ACOTAR, I know I’ll root for Taemlin before Rhysand comes and it will be hard for me to like Rhysand no matter how awful Taemlin would be (yeah, something is wrong with me) And don’t even let me start with Throne of Glass. The Romance there…

REASON: The Romance aspect

4.) Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (Creekwood #2)

I loved Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, a lot, so I want to keep on reading the Creekwood Series but the next book features Leah. I already met Leah in Simon vs. but she’s not my favorite character. Sometimes, I do find her okay, but most of the times, I don’t get her. I find her too indifferent sometimes. So I’m scared to get on with the series reading about Leah. I’m thinking I should just wait for another book about any of the characters from Creekwood.

REASON: The Character

5.) Luna and the Lie by Mariana Zapata

Mariana Zapata is by far my favorite slow-burn romance author. I discovered her last year and I’ve already read 5 of her books. And not just read, Reread. Can I be honest how many times I’ve read her books?
The Wall of Winnipeg: 4 times, From Lukov with Love: 3 times, Kulti: 3 times.
It’s no secret I’m a fast reader, that I can read an entire book in one sitting while having maybe a lunch break. That’s why it’s possible for me to reread books whenever I want to and I love Zapata’s books so much I’ve been rereading her books lately, BUT her latest book, Luna and the Lie has been getting not-so-good reviews. Comments like ‘this one doesn’t have the charm her other books have’. That’s not a good thing. Some reviews even say: the plot is the combination of the plots of her other books. I don’t think I’ll like that. So can’t read this book in a fear that it’ll ruin my love for the author. The bad reviews have made me feel this way.

REASON: Bad reviews.

I’m curious. What books you’re too scared to read? And why? I’m also curious if you’ve read the books in my list and how are they?

  1. Great post! I’m scared to read Wicked King for a different reason – I know there is a massive cliffhanger and I don’t know if I can’t handle it without the next book to read! THUG is amazing – def lives up to that hype. Leah, I liked BUT if you didn’t like her in Simon, I really doubt you’ll like the book and what happens – if I’m being real.

    1. Oh right!!!, there’s a cliffhanger, maybe let’s just wait for the next book. haha. i’ll make sure to man, I mean woman up and pick up THUG this year..

Thank you for being honest about Leah. I just decided not to read it. 🙂

  2. I 100% agree with THUG!! Hype terrifies me (and is the reason my TBR is soooooo looooong!). I would recommend giving Leah a go though. I didn’t think much of her in Simon, but enjoyed getting to know why she is the way she in Offbeat. It changed my mind about her.

  3. I’m a little anxious to read Wicked King just in case it doesn’t quite live up to the first book for me. I’ve had THUG on my shelf for ages, but it’s just not the type of book I usually enjoy so there’s always something I’m more excited to pick up…
    My TTT this week.

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling anxious to read The Wicked King. I’ll pick it up when all the books in the series are out. hehe. That way no more cliffhangers and heartaches. I’m sure Jude and Cardan will have a happy ending.

Same here, i have THUG on my shelf since it’s out, really. I also read that type of books but the hype…

  4. This is so relatable, Lili! I relate the most to your opinion about Maas’ books. I’ve heard a mix of positive and negative things about ACOTAR and the other books. That’s why I was a little reluctant to read Catwoman hehe

  5. I am the same about The Hate U Give. It’s just so hyped, that I would almost feel bad for not liking it? I really want to read it though, but I don’t know 😬. I also agree about the Cruel Prince! I haven’t read either of them, but it kind of sounds like ACOTAR which I didn’t like very well. I guess the hype is keeping me from that one, too!

    1. You didn’t like it? See what if end up not liking it, I’d feel terrible for rating it low. 🙂 I love The Cruel Prince but it’s not an easy read, and Wicked King would be hard to read coz the MCs are literally not in good terms though the romnace is there.

  6. All good reasons to be scared to read a book!! I still haven’t read Ready Player One because, even though I’ve had it since it was published, I didn’t get to it before the hype of the movie started… Yes, it sat on my shelf for that long… Now I really don’t even want to read it because everyone has hyped it up so much…

  7. I loved all Sarah J Maas’s books. Though I prefer Acotar (FYI, the first book isn’t the best.) I didn’t like Leah on the offbeat too much. I found the protagonist extremely clueless and whinny, which annoyed me no end. I loved Simon though.

  8. This is SUCH an awesome take on this week’s prompt I might just have to steal it from you at some point! I loved seeing your reasonings behind the fear and that’s definitely something I can relate to. I recently read Throne of Glass after DNF’ing ACOTAR about 2 years ago. I know that series has A LOT of romance, but I was pleasantly surprised by ToG. It was a lot more enjoyable than I expected and, while I can see a lot of romance in the future of the series, I actually quite liked the romance/love triangle (which is actually a love V) which is not something I often find in YA fantasy. If you ever decide to give any of these books a go I’d love to hear wether your fear was warranted!

    1. You can use this concept in a post whenever you want to. 🙂 And that would be a good experiment, I can read these books and see. Then it’s another blog post idea. hehe. Thank you for sahring me your experience with ToG. 🙂

  9. The Wicked King scares me, i’ve started reading it but stopped.. I didn’t like how Cardan is in The Cruel Prince so I just don’t know if I can handle him being more horrible. I haven’t read THUG either because of the hype.

Bit sad you’re scared of SJM’s books, when I got into it I knew nothing about any of it because I never bothered with the reviews but in ACOTAR … I hated Tamlin straight of the bat and loved Rhysand lol, then I saw reviews afterwards and saw how everyone liked him and I’m like ‘WHY THO? HE WAS AWFUL’ but then I guess it’s because I’ve been in two abusive relationships so I saw the signs straightaway

  10. I’m also scared to read The Wicked King because I know there’s a huge cliff hanger and the other book doesn’t come out until later this year. I’m also scared to read THUG anything by Sarah J. Maas because the hype is so massive. I don’t want to be disappointed.

    1. Seems like we have the same issues. It would really be a bummer if we get disappointed. i might still read THUG someday and The wicked King when book 3 comes out. as for Maas books, I already gave away some of the copies I own so I think I won’t be reading them ever.

  11. I’m a bit scared to read King of Scars because I love the characters and the world but I’m scared I’ll pick it up and not enjoy it.

  12. I hate Leah… that was a “choice” the author could have not taken hahaha I heard the book is annoying and others say they love it… I go with the annoying ones Haha I don’t trust the others xD

I want to read throne of glass hehe but the other onea… I get it with the romance, the triangles, and the over hyped:/

  13. I wish I’d feared reading the Wicked King and waited to read because I’ve been left with such a long wait for book 3 (I got lucky and won an ARC so i read WK 8 months before release). Its deliciously good though!

  14. I definitely identify with your “bad reviews” reason. Bad reviews almost kept me from listening to Room by Emma Donoghue. And it turned out to be a book I loved. Bad reviews almost kept me from watching the movie Castaway as well, but that was another stellar choice.

Good luck with your books you’re scared to read list!

  15. I don’t usually let other bad reviews put me off unless it’s from someone I’m very familiar with. But I totally get the point about Hype – it hasn’t put me off really yet, but it has made me slower to pick up a few books for fear they wouldn’t live up to the hype surrounding them. Interesting post.

  16. I’m exactly the same with THUG – I haven’t heard anything bad about and keep leaving it sitting on my shelf because what if I’m the first not to like it? Aha! There are more elements to a book than just the important messages, after all. Great post – I completely feel your fear, I have the same issues with my TBR pile!
