Kissing Tolstoy by Penny Reid (Book Review)

Hi Blisses,

TITLE: Kissing Tolstoy
BY: Penny Reid
SERIES: Dear Professor #1
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
PUBLICATION: Nov. 7, 2017 by Cipher-Naught
RATING:

Oh my God, this is such a beautiful, sweet treat. This surprised me big time. This book tells the story of Anna and her Russian Lit professor, Luca. First of all, I love their first meeting. It promised everything good for the rest of the story. And then there’s their second meeting which I love even more and then I love every minute that follows.

It’s universally acknowledged that having a relationship with your teacher or student is taboo though it is somehow accepted. Well, in some places it is accepted but in my country, ahm, it’s frowned upon. In this book, it’s the same. It’s accepted but not without its consequences in the eyes of the public. But personally, I don’t mind it. I also believe that in love, age doesn’t matter so I don’t mind that Luca is 10 years older than 21-year old Anna. Besides, for me, Anna is not a kid. Compared to Luca, she might be a kid but technically no. She’s 21 and when I was 21, I was already thinking like an adult which means I was already capable of making decisions for myself and owning my mistakes whenever I had them. If Anna was maybe 18, with still a “-teen” in her age, I’d be worried but she’s 21.

So yeah, I trusted Anna for whatever action she wants to take. I also trusted Luca for behaving like the mature one. And wow, THEY DIDN’T DISAPPOINT ME. I love every action that both Luca and Anna took in the book. I love the push and pull because it was needed. I liked the way they stand back or step forward at some points, whichever step is needed in a particular circumstance. These two are two of the smartest characters I’ve ever read about. And I’m not just talking about how smart they are with their philosophies and awesome debates or discussions. Speaking of those discussions, I love the healthy debates regarding their own beliefs and opinions. Oh, how I want someone like Luca. Every guy I met only wants to win the argument. Hehe.

But anyway, the one to applaud here is the author. My God, Penny Reid. Before reading, I also had my own opinions regarding the ‘things’ that Luca and Anna discussed, but you confused me. I couldn’t choose a side now because both Luca and Anna had a point. Just for the record though, initially, I was inclined at most of Luca’s points. 🙂

Lastly, I want to talk about how steamy this book is. I know the concept is taboo so I should’ve expected the little steam but I didn’t. I wasn’t expecting it would be as steamy as it is and more importantly, that I’d like it. It’s the RIGHT AMOUNT or KIND of steam and I love it.

My only complaint is it’s too short. Gosh even the side characters rock such as Emily, Anna’s friend. Just look at this conversation between Anna and Emily.

Anna: Fine. Fine, I freaked out like a dork! You would’ve too. I’m telling you, just looking at him, he wasn’t the kind of guy girls like us date.
Emily: Girls like us? You mean smart, funny, incredibly beautiful and talented girls?

How awesome is that girl friend huh?

Overall, if you’re looking for a fluffy, sweet, adorable short read, THIS IS THE BOOK. I kid you not. That is if you’re ok with the taboo concept because I understand that we all have different opinions regarding things. But personally, I highly recommend this book.

So what do you think of this book? Have you read it or panning to? Let’s chat.
