I know I don’t have the right to criticize my fellow writers’ books or artists’ works but sometimes I really wish I can change something about the books I’m reading. Don’t you? Most of the times, it’s the part of the plot, a scene or something that a character did or did not. But sometimes, it’s simply the cover.
This week’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl, is “Cover Redesigns I hated/Loved” but being the rebel that I am, I changed it a bit. And now I present to you 10 book covers I really find underwhelming and could’ve done better.
1.) A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi
This book is what made me fall in love with YA Contemporary again but I can’t ignore the fact that I find the cover bland and messy, and really, they could do better than this.
2.) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Seriously, I frown whenever I see this cover. I don’t appreciate it.
3.) Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Just because… lol.
4.) It Had To Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Everybody loves boobs. hehe. But really, they have to give it to us this way? Too close up.
5.) Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan
There’s nothing wrong with this cover except if you know the story of Archer. It’s too deep and even emotional, I was expecting a cover that’s more meaningful than a guy’s bare back.
6.) Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught
Just in case it’s not clear, this is a Historical Romance. The cover is, I think, the picture of Westmoreland, the setting and the series name of this book. I don’t like it. When it comes to Historical Romance, I think we just have to stick on ladies in dresses clinging on a guy, usually an almost naked guy. They’re not my favorite, but compared to THIS cover, I prefer those.
7.) Pet Sematary by Stephen King
I’m currently reading this book and so far, I’m liking it. I think it’s very dark but this cover? I don’t know if it’s trying to be scary or funny.
8.) The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
I’m into minimalist designs and having read the book, I can say this cover makes sense but still I don’t like it. It’s simply underwhelming.
9.) The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
I read the book last month and I thought it was ok. The trailer for the new TV show adaptation is also good. But this cover!!! In my eyes, it looks like two separate images from google, that of a girl and a bear, and then someone edited them by putting them together. It’s just a little lacking especially for a well-known book.
10.) The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
This book was very well-crafted and I think the plot is overall brilliant though it has one part that I didn’t like. I despised that part so much that I gave this book a 3.5 stars instead of 5. But let’s talk about the cover. This cover might work on hardbound copies -a bit- but that’s it. Let’s be real, the design are just bunch of lines and meager shapes. It reminds me of geometry. haha. Sorry.
There you have it guys – ten books I find underwhelming. They’re not necessarily ugly or the worst covers but I just think they could still be better.
What do you think of these covers? Let’s chat.
