Book Review: That Second Chance by Meghan Quinn

REVIEW

It feels like it’s been a long while since I’ve written a review, though it’s actually just last week. It’s because I didn’t review the last few books I read since the last book I reviewed. I’ve been procrastinating. But anyway, I wanted to review this one because Meghan Quinn is a new favorite contemporary romance author of mine. I’ve only started reading her works this year and I’ve fallen in love with her writing style.

That Second Chance is a first in the series, Getting Lucky, introducing the 4 Knightly brothers. Obviously, each of them will get their own book but book 1 is about the oldest brother, not sibling, Griffin. The reason I introduced the series first, which I don’t usually do, is because the book one’s main conflict is the supposed curse that the Knightly brothers have. They will all have broken love — that’s the curse and so the series title is Getting Lucky.

The curse is basically the only thing that kept the main characters from giving in to their feelings. That Second Chance features a romance that is so long winded. Not that I’m complaining, I love slow-burn romance and I love it more when the main characters develop friendship first. And I adore Griffin and Ren’s friendship. It’s the kind of friendship that I want for myself, which I already have, by the way.

But I do think others will find the development of the romance really slow despite the great friendship and I blame Griffin a bit. He becomes too focused on the curse that made them push and pull each other for some time. But Griffin suffered a loss that makes his attitude toward the curse understandable. The title, That Second Chance is really for Griffin. So there’s that and anyway, it’s so easy to love Griffin and Ren even individually. Ren is the new Algebra teacher in town and Griffin is the kindest soul you could ever met. He does a lot of things for other people and for the town itself.

Speaking of the town, Port Snow, Maine…Seriously, I want to move there. The town is so adorable. The setting really makes the story more endearing. It’s so beautifully written. The people too. Speaking of the people, the dynamics of the characters is amazing, especially the Knightly clan. They’re the best meddlers in the world, making Griffin and Ren’s romance happen. There’s a lot of meddling in this book and I love them.

Finally, I want to say that the story is not solid romance but it is heartwarming and fun to read. There are parts I would’ve loved more if they were different but overall, this is a comfort read. And that says a lot because Griffin’s backstory is not my usual favorite in romances but the author handled it really well and mildly, less drama than usual whenever this kind of trope is included in romance. That said, this is also a story of acceptance, of moving on.

RATING: 3.5 blissful pages with lilies

I recommend this book if you love slow-burn romance, great friendship and family dynamics. Like I said this is equally fun and heartwarming.
