Broken Heart Attack by James J. Cudney (Book Review)

Hi Blisses,

TITLE: Broken Heart Attack
BY: James J. Cudney
SERIES: Braxton Campus Mysteries #2
GENRE: Mystery
PUBLICATION: Nov. 25th 2018
RATING:

Broken Heart Attack happens right after the events of book 1 (Academic Curveball). In the previous book, Kellan accidentally became a detective when he solved a murder in Braxton before the police. In this book, once again, he’s thrown to playing detective and crime solver. This time, a murder of someone close to him – one of her Nana D’s friends. And in this book, he’s also dealing with the truth about his wife that he learned in the previous book.

First of all, let me admit that I haven’t read any other cozy mystery prior to reading this author’s works. In fact, I wasn’t even sure what exactly ‘cozy mystery’ means. I mean how can a mystery novel be cozy? Lol. Sometimes I can be really ignorant like this. Hehe. But anyway, I’m thankful that James Cudney’s books are the first cozy mysteries I’ve ever read. Because I really enjoyed them. Obviously. Another admission though, I didn’t get to review Book 1 of this series and I think it’s a bit late for me to do now. But at least I’m now giving you my review of book 2.

This is such an easy read that made me think I’d be reading too many coz mysteries in the future. I just love how smooth the storyline went. Like the story is giving me the time or chance to enjoy every moment of the story. Not only that, the mystery kept me invested till the end. It knows just what to reveal and how is enough revelation every part of the story needs to make me keep swiping my tablet (it’s where I read it ’cause I still haven’t bought a new kindle and only have the kindle app) and solve the murder with Kellan. And speaking of the murder, the crime seemed so carefully woven for my enjoyment even though it involves death. I also like the side stories included in the plot, regarding Kellan’s personal life, family and work. They made my heart goes to Kellan and really care for him. In short, the side stories made me more invested in Kellan’s character.

Kellan is the kind of character you would want to hang out with. He’s such a goofy, humorous guy who is also really nice. That makes him a cool person. I really enjoyed solving crimes with him. I also love the side characters even the new ones that are introduced in this book. All of them easily fit in the story. I especially loved Nana D and her friends. I really laughed hard when I first met the members of the Septuagenarian Club.

So overall, I highly recommend this book. Especially if you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, this book is a must-read along with all other books in the series. Reading the first two books now made me more excited to read the next ones because I’m curious as to what Kellan would get himself into in Braxton. Though actually, I have an idea about book 3 because I was a part of its blog tour when it came out earlier this year.

And oh I almost forgot. I freakin’ love the titles of the books in this series. They’re simply brilliant and too cool. And as an aspiring author myself, I’m a little envious at James’ creativity. I mean, for me, titling, finding the right title that fits perfectly to my book is one of the hardest part. Hehe.

      1. lol. very true. I also have Father Figure in my kindle but can’t push myself to read it because I know it’s a heavy story and my heart is seldom ready for heavy stories. I’ll just have to stick on Braxton mysteries for now. 🙂 🙂

    1. Now I’m blushing which always happens when someone assures me I can be a writer. hehe. Thank you. Glad you like my review and even the formatting of the post. 🙂 Also I’m well and working on mymanuscripts. I’m writing a YA fantasy so I’m kinda having a hard (but fulfilling) time with world-building.
