This book is so close to my heart. Like a best friend or a lover I’ve always known. Don’t be surprised if this review turned more personal that it should be.

When I was a kid, my parents used to remind me to choose my friends well. But as a teenager, it was apparent that I’m not a good child. *Grinning* When other morally upright kids choose their friends very carefully, my circle of friends range so wide, it wasn’t limited to the ones who are good influence. Why? simply because I believe strongly that every person has a heart. Which is foolish, for some people but I’ve been believing in that since I was a kid. And I’m still alive and intact. So what does that mean?

And so finding a book with characters who incredibly terrible and their own way is like finding my heart. This is a story of

A gambler, a convict, a wayward son, a lost Grisha, a Suli girl who had become a killer, a boy from the Barrel who had become something worse.

And so my heart was stolen from me from the very first chapter. I was hooked before I even met all the main characters. And when I met them all, I saw myself. These six people so different from each other; different races, different background and yet found each other to do something so impossible.

CHARACTERS:

NINA – the lost Grisha who says everything she wants to say but has the softest heart there is.
MATTHIAS – A broken, wounded warrior who can get to your heart by surprising you how sweet and loving he can be no matter how broken his soul is.
WYLAN – a nerdy guy I’ve always wanted in a guy best friend, so adorable and you can’t help but love him and cuddle with him. (Why not?)
JESPER – a guy who made mistake and seems hopeless but always finds a way to make you smile and make things lighter by his remarks and jokes.
INEJ – a girl who have gone through a lot and learned how to survive. I’ve never said this since Katnis Everdeen and Hermione Granger, but I’ve found yet another favorite heroine. She’s strong and wise, a good friend, a good daughter. She’s loyal and reliable. She’s a bad-ass with all her bad-ass kills. She’s perfect even with her flaws and fears. she doesn’t give up. (I’m crying right now…) I want to be her.
KAZ – oh damn this guy. He is the kind of guy who I’d depend when my good friends criticize him. He’s this guy who, like Inej, saw it all, overcame it all. He’s so broken yet never crumbles. He chose to be brave when most would’ve just let life have it’s worst way with him. He is perfectly imperfect yet knows what he’s doing. When he made a mistake, he friggin admitted it and dealt with it. He knows what must be done and do it. He relies but knows the limit of trusting others. He’s limp, and wear gloves. He’s traumatic and capable of fainting. He is normal yet he isn’t. I want to have his babies. SERIOUSLY!!!

The characters are all relatable and how on earth is that possible? Like I said, they’re different from each other, with different background from different races. They’re the perfect definition of a perfect team only it’s composed of imperfect people. need I say more?

I will say more.

Maybe what they’re doing is wrong-an impossible heist. Breaking into the most well-protected safe in the world to steal a man. But no matter how hard it is, and whatever they face, they never falter,they stayed loyal with each other and do what they had to do. It was perfect.

A friend of mine, Natali, said that this series is so different from the previous one, that it’s as if a different author has written it. And she was sooooo right. The only thing I recognise my Miss Bardugo’s writing that I came to love from The Grisha Trilogy is her way of handling the twists and turns. Foreshadowing is her talent too. There’s no effing single dull moments. There’s no slow pacing parts. Surprises popped up every corner making me alive every f*cking second. I’m always gasping, sighing, sniffing and cuddling as I read this. It was amazing how the story went, with all the flashbacks making the reader understands the whys and the hows.

And the Romance as the side plot? The author has added the juts-perfect amount of it in the story. Like a side dish, added in the most delicious main course. IT WAS A PERFECT MEAL.

“Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you’ll meet a boy who
will learn your favorite flower, your favorite song, your favorite
sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won’t
matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else
does. Only that boy earns you heart.”

Now that I met them, I kinda wish this is a trilogy or you know, like Harry Potter with seven books. I’ll never get tired going on in an adventure with these characters…

Just an advice: Brace yourself, and don’t even try guessing anything. you’ll be wrong anyway.

I’m a mess right now but the kind of mess I love.

And yes, the friendship between Inej and Nina. OMG!!!!!…. First time Nina showed up, I was a bit worried, I was expecting her to be like Zoya from the Grisha trilogy(who happens to be Nina’s mentor, btw). I loved Zoya but she was always flirting and sometimes just don’t shut up. Nina speaks a lot too but she knows what she has to say and knows who to flirt. Darn it, theirs is friendship goals. When one is down, one is picking up. When one is crying, one is wiping the other’s tears. When one is sick, one is taking care.

Dear Women and Girls,

Let’s be like Nina and Inej. We need not to be rivals and always competing with each other. We should always get each others back. That would be really, really nice.

Okay I’m gonna stop now for I still yet to read the second book…..
